Although Hofbauer (UK) Ltd was established in 1986, the manufacturing base in Germany (Gregor Hofbauer GmbH) was established way back in 1902. Whilst the age of the company means nothing in isolation, it is a clear indicator of the success and innovation that has been at the heart of the plastic cases they have manufactured over that time frame.

Today, Hofbauer produces a range of impact resistant plastic cases, mainly utilising a tough polypropylene material.

However, there are 2 distinct methods in which Hofbauer protective cases are manufactured – injection moulding and blow moulding.

Many of the stylish presentation cases that Hofbauer manufacture are created using injection moulding.

Often used for sample cases (i.e. by sales reps during sales presentations), they are also commonly used for storage and transportation of spare parts, tools, components and even for taking equipment out onto site (e.g. service engineers).

The use of injection moulding also means this type of case is incredibly cost effective. The single wall design of the cases ensures a light weight without sacrificing performance, whilst also allowing for stylish and ergonomic designs to be achieved.

It also means that this range of cases – including those such as Xtrabag, Maxibag and Minibag – are available in a number of standard colour options.

This range of Hofbauer cases can also be easily branded with external print, as well as having foam inserts added to the interior too. Graphics can even be added by in-mould labelling during the manufacturing process.

The second process that Hofbauer use for manufacturing their cases is blow moulding.

Unlike the injection moulded plastic cases, this method produces cases with a twin wall construction. This in turn creates a protective “air cushion” within the case, allowing for increased levels of protection. As the moulding is “one piece” in design, all handles, latches, hinges etc. tend to be integral to the case (improving durability).

As a result, these cases – including Quantum T and Megabag – tend to be used for heavier duty applications such as protection for specialist equipment and tools.

Whilst the cases allow for the same enhancements as the other Hofbauer cases – notably foam inserts and branding options – the manufacturing process also allows for the internal walls of the cases to be moulded to specific shapes. This effectively creates individual, tailored compartments for the contents.

Although this does not provide the same level of protection as foam inserts, these moulded surfaces are easier to clean and suitable for very high-volume requirements (such as retail sales).
