If you need the most durable packaging for your business, you should seriously consider triple wall cardboard boxes.

Triple wall cardboard boxes are the strongest, most durable form of corrugated transit packaging. It uses three layers of corrugated material to provide performance levels comparable with wooden crates – with less bulk and weight. Custom-sized triple-wall cardboard boxes can also reduce ongoing shipping costs, being perfect for weights of 100kg or more and helping to better protect their contents during transit. Read more

About triple wall boxes

Widely used for export and other industrial packaging applications, triple wall cardboard boxes (also known as Tri-Wall) are arguably the strongest, most durable form of corrugated packaging currently available.

In fact, triple wall boxes are often used as an alternative to wooden crates rather than similar corrugated packaging, offering similar compression strength to timber (and up to 10 times as much as alternative double wall cardboard boxes).

This strength also means that triple wall cardboard boxes can cope with weights of 100kg and above.

And whilst several different grades allow triple wall packaging to be tailored to specific applications, they are commonly used for pallet boxes (and pallet optimised boxes) or other transit applications requiring stacking.

You can also print triple-wall packaging, allowing branding, logos, and any specialist handling or transport instructions to be clearly displayed.

The inherent properties of the tri-wall corrugated material also mean that it offers increased protection against perforation and impact. It can even help reduce any adverse effects of changes in ambient temperature.

Using triple-wall cardboard boxes can have several environmental benefits as well.

A similar-sized triple-wall box is considerably less bulky and has a lower tare weight than an equivalent timber crate. This reduced mass means that space efficiency can improve in transit, reducing the amount of transportation required (and the carbon emissions this would generate).

GWP supply custom-sized triple wall cardboard boxes, which also help reduce your business’ shipping costs. As you no longer pay to ship empty space or excessive amounts of void fill, the long-term savings you can make can be significant.

Corrugated cardboard is typically made from recycled material and is considerably easier to recycle at the end of its life. Recyclability is a considerable benefit for end users of your packaging, too.

Key benefits of triple wall cardboard boxes

The key benefits of triple wall boxes include:

  • Up to 10 times greater compression strength compared to standard corrugated.
  • Highest levels of rigidity and crush/abrasion resistance.
  • Also minimises the effects of temperature changes.
  • Comparable performance and compression strength to wooden crates.
  • Light tare-weight to reduce shipping costs.
  • Considerably less bulky and more space-efficient than wooden crates.
  • Can be manufactured to custom sizes, further reducing shipping costs.
  • Ideal for stacking, pallet boxes and export packaging.
  • Different grades to suit various applications.
  • Can be printed to add branding, instructions, etc.

What is triple wall cardboard used for?

Packaging manufacturers use triple-wall cardboard to make heavy-duty, industrial packaging. Due to their strength and durability, businesses use triple wall boxes to ship heavy and bulky items such as industrial equipment, large parts/components, and products such as pumps, boilers, etc.

What is a triple wall box?

A triple-wall box is effectively corrugated packaging manufactured from triple-walled cardboard. Triple-wall means the material has three layers of fluting sandwiched between 4 liners. This composition makes the material extremely strong, rigid, and perfect for heavy-duty industrial packaging.

Is tri-wall and triple-wall the same thing?

Whilst tri-wall and triple-wall terms are interchangeable, tri-wall refers to the brand name and company that manufactures this material. Headquartered in Hong Kong, Tri-Wall is an international business with manufacturing sites and offices worldwide (including the UK).

Are triple-wall cardboard boxes much stronger than double-wall boxes?

Triple-wall cardboard boxes can be as much as ten times stronger (in terms of compression strength) than numerous standard corrugated materials. However, in many cases, various grades of double-wall material are suitable for specific applications, with triple-wall being more of a replacement for timber crates. GWP engineers are happy to advise on the most suitable material for your needs.

Can I use triple-wall cardboard boxes instead of timber cases?

Triple wall cardboard boxes offer comparable strength when compared with wooden crates. They are frequently cheaper, lighter in weight and less bulky too.

Are triple wall cardboard boxes environmentally friendly?

As triple wall cardboard boxes have a lighter tare weight and are less bulky than timber crates, they are much more efficient to ship. This lower weight/bulk not only reduces costs but also makes them more environmentally friendly as well. Corrugated cardboard is also much easier to recycle than wood.

How much weight can triple wall boxes hold?

Depending on their design, triple wall boxes can hold in excess of 135kg. This strength makes them ideal for heavy-duty packaging applications.

What is Tri-Mite?

Tri Mite is a similar material to triple wall cardboard, with the main difference being that it allows for the machining of 45-degree joints (which provides a very neat aesthetic appearance).

The combination of triple wall cardboard material, alongside our expertise in industrial packaging design, means that your business can get packaging that provides exceptionally high levels of performance. However, it allows you to source packaging that is actually tailored to your specific requirements, too.
