FSC packaging supplier
If you want to improve the sustainability of your packaging and overall business, switching to FSC® certified packaging can make a significant difference.
FSC packaging is any box or pack that uses material from well-managed forests and recycled sources. Common FSC packaging includes cardboard boxes, paper packaging, wooden pallets and timber crates. As many as seven in ten consumers prefer products, including packaging, that feature the FSC logo.

Strategies we can help you implement include reduction in material use, minimising volume in transit (and therefore emissions) and aiding recyclability for end users by eliminating films and plastics.

More info on FSC certified packaging
As GWP are FSC certified (Chain of Custody Certificate No. C161914), you can source custom FSC packaging products for your business from us.
But why should you do this?
The obvious answer is that it can significantly improve the sustainability of your packaging and, in turn, wider business.
FSC-certified packaging uses material that is traceable back to sustainable forests managed by the Forest Stewardship Council. It ensures high levels of environmental conservation, promotion of reforesting, and helping to reduce illegal logging.
Besides this, the FSC also supports smallholders and indigenous people in terms of protecting their environment, but also economically in providing training, safety equipment, decent wages and the right to join or form trade unions. FSC also allows indigenous peoples the right to use the forests as they did before.
Your customers prefer FSC packaging
Ultimately, with modern consumers demanding sustainable products – and with FSC packaging being proof of your environmental values – the positive impact on your business can be significant.
Three out of five consumers expect paper and cardboard packaging to be from sustainable sources. 75% of people living in the UK also prefer a product bearing the FSC logo, compared to an otherwise identical one without.
So besides doing your part for the environment, using FSC packaging can also help improve sales, customer retention, and brand perception.
FSC packaging FAQs
What does FSC stand for?
FSC® is an acronym for Forest Stewardship Council®. FSC is a foundation started in 1993 in Brazil to counter deforestation in the Amazonian rainforest. It has since become the worldwide standard for sustainable forestry, with more than 185 million hectares of forests now being FSC certified.
What is FSC packaging?
FSC-certified packaging is typically corrugated and other paper-based boxes, inserts and POS that use material (i.e. wood) that is traceable back to FSC-managed forests. Often combined with recycled content, FSC packaging is sustainable and less environmentally harmful.
What does the FSC do?
Besides ensuring sustainable management of forests (in terms of regulations, guidelines and verifying compliance with these practices), the FSC also work to protect wildlife and indigenous peoples who call the world’s forests their home.
What FSC certification does GWP hold?
GWP has achieved FSC Chain of Custody certification (License number FSC – C161914), which verifies your corrugated packaging to “well-managed forests”. These forests are certified in accordance with the strict rules of the organisation.
What is a chain of custody?
The “chain of custody” (the certification that GWP holds) allows traceability of any material claimed to be FSC certified back to the forest it originated from. Each link – between forest, processors, manufacturers and even retail outlets – has its own certification and is independently verified annually.
Can I print FSC logos on the packaging that my business uses?
If you specify FSC-approved packaging from GWP, you can include printed logos and trademarks on your boxes. Doing this is subject to FSC packaging logo guidelines and approvals, however.
Are there other ways I can promote having FSC packaging?
You can promote your use of FSC packaging in other ways. To do so, you must first obtain an FSC promotional license (details here). A promotional license allows you to use FSC branding on your website, printed literature and other promotional material.
Is FSC available on all packaging?
Virtually all of the corrugated cardboard GWP use in manufacturing your packaging is from FSC-approved sources (although there may be a few specialist grades of material not currently certified). As such, you can source FSC packaging, including eCommerce boxes, transit packaging, retail-ready packs, and even cardboard point of sale.
Are FSC boxes sustainable?
Corrugated boxes are themselves inherently sustainable, typically using large amounts of recycled material. However, using FSC packaging ensures that any virgin fibres and material also come from sustainable sources.
Do FSC® certified products cost more?
As the vast majority of material GWP uses is FSC approved, there are typically no additional costs for using FSC packaging at your business.
Is FSC® different from other forest certification schemes?
Whilst there are numerous other forest certification schemes, these are less widely recognised or do not provide the same degree of environmental, social and economic standards as the FSC does. As such, FSC is the only scheme endorsed by major environmental charities, including WWF, Greenpeace, and Woodland Trust.
Experts in sustainable packaging
GWP has been FSC certified for approximately three years, achieving Chain of Custody certification in 2020. But we have been using FSC-approved material for many years previously.
But there are many other environmental benefits to your business of working with us.
For example, an award-winning design team at GWP can reduce the amount of material used in your packaging. Reducing raw material use minimises environmental impact and results in no loss of protection for your items.
Using lighter material alongside custom-sized packaging can also minimise the weight and volume of your packaging in transit. Doing so not only reduces vehicle emissions but also saves you money too.
Clever engineering can replace materials such as foams, films and plastics with recyclable and biodegradable corrugated material. And it is even possible to aid recycling for your customers by using printed instructions and logos. You can, of course, print FSC logos on any packaging you source from us.
Most importantly, GWP can give you a holistic view of your packaging. For example, using a specific material – although not perceived as sustainable – could minimise environmental impact through reduced damage or reusability.
If you can see the benefits to your business of switching to FSC packaging or taking a broader view of your packaging’s sustainability, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
