Detailed information on Foam Container Inserts
Whilst foam trays and container inserts are similar in terms of the role they play in manufacturing businesses, there are a number of subtle differences.
Firstly, foam container inserts tend to be fixed into the outer container (whereas foam trays can be removed or used as a standalone product). The benefit of this is that they can offer increased protection for very delicate items, due to eliminating any movement of the foam within the outer container.
They can also be precisely tailored to your specific part or component too, further enhancing protection.
However, perhaps the main benefit is that they can be used alongside other forms of insert, such as dividers manufactured from bubble board or Correx®. This makes them perfect for use as kitting trays in lineside applications (where different items of varying fragility may be included in a single outer tote), and can also help to reduce costs through minimising use of the foam material where it is not required.
Ultimately foam inserts can help protect items during handling. This includes not only cushioning against impact but preventing surface scuffs and marring and even offering specialist protection (e.g. using anti-static grades of material).
Efficiency and productivity gains
As with the other forms of foam dunnage, such as foam dividers or shadow boards, the other main benefit of using foam container inserts (alongside part protection) is the improvements in efficiency and productivity that can be achieved.
The foam inserts allow for containers to be loaded much more quickly and easily, and equally can help with unpacking too.
It is easier to see when items within a container are running low, and laser etching of part or batch numbers directly on the foams surfaces also helps with identification of specific items.
Fixed foam container inserts can also prevent overloading of the outer tote itself. This not only helps to stop damage to the contents (or the tote itself), but also prevents unsafe handling practices (i.e. staff attempting to lift containers which are too heavy to do so safely).
Key Benefits of container inserts at a glance
- Cushion protection for delicate or expensive parts during handling processes
- Foam material also helps prevent surface scratching, scuffs and marring
- Can be combined with Correx® or Bubbleboard divider sets
- Ideal for lineside and “kitting” applications, or as part of wider supply chain
- Speeds up packing and unpacking processes
- Option to fully customise recesses to specific parts
- Prevents overloading of containers (preventing damage, poor handling practices)
- Laser etched part numbers, batch IDs and instructions directly onto foam
- Specialist grades such as anti-static available
- Source foam and tote together for improved compatibility and performance
FAQs
Common questions about foam trays
Below covers a range of the questions – and answers – most often raised when discussing foam container inserts.
Saying that, if you cannot find the information you need here, please get in touch – an advisor will be happy to help.
Can foam be added to standard Euro Containers?
Euro Containers of all sizes and specifications can be enhanced using foam inserts. They can also be combined with other types of foam dunnage (such as dividers) and even other types of insert such as Correx® or Bubble board fittings.
Is it possible to add foam to custom Correx® totes?
As all foam container inserts are manufactured bespoke to your requirements, any foam specified for a (custom sized) Correx® tote will be a perfect fit. And by sourcing exterior container and foam together, it improves the fit and compatibility between the two.
What is container foam manufactured from?
Container foam inserts are manufactured from Plastazote® polyethylene foam. Also used in the fabrication of case inserts and high end foam packaging, Plastazote provides excellent cushioning protection, will stop surface scuffs and scratches, and is lightweight and easy to handle.
Will using foam help productivity?
Using foam within your handling containers can improve productivity in a number of ways. For example, it makes packing and unpacking much quicker, as each part or component has a specific recess. It also prevents under or overloading of the totes and can help identify at a glance if a specific item is running low and needs replenishing.
What is the lifespan of foam container inserts?
Foam inserts for containers are very durable and long lasting, meaning they will be ideal even for the harshest of manufacturing environments. As with the exterior totes, they are frequently used well in excess of 500 trips.
Can I choose different colours for my foam?
Foam container inserts can be specified in a number of colours. This means that you can match your company branding, but also use different colours to identify different sets of similar parts and / or batches.
