David, having gained qualifications in auditing, accounting, tax, and financial analysis, started his career as an Auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers. After a period at the Department for International Development (DFID) where he became involved in the oversight of a range of climate adaptation and mitigation programmes David moved on to a leadership role at Zero Waste Scotland – a public body committed to supporting Scotland’s transition towards a more circular economy.
Joining Macfarlane Packaging in early 2023, David leads the sustainability and broader ESG agendas for the business. He has developed the strategic direction of travel and overseen the Group’s change programme, transitioning the company for success within a transforming global economy.
His role at Macfarlane has also seen him work closely with GWP (which became part of Macfarlane Group in 2021), being instrumental in several key projects, including the installation of solar panels at Cricklade in 2024.
During 2025, David took up the Chairmanship of the industry trade body’s (Confederation of Paper Industries), Regulatory Committee, where he supports the industry to manage the growing regulatory requirements being placed upon it.
Outside of his efforts for Macfarlane and GWP, David serves as a trustee for MPS (a national health charity) and enjoys spending time with his young family.
