Applications and uses for industrial plastic trays
Handling in your factory, production facility, or even laboratory can be a potential bottleneck for efficiency.
Moving multiple products, samples, parts, or components quickly and easily can boost staff productivity and provide many other benefits.
It is becoming increasingly common for many manufacturing businesses to utilise industrial plastic trays (such as those manufactured from corrugated polypropylene) for varying handling applications.
Perfect for moving parts from storage to production lines or finished items to despatch areas ready from shipment, the typically smaller handling trays (compared with larger-sized tote boxes) can aid manual handling activities for your staff. Safe handling can also be important in terms of health and safety.
Features that further enhance the usability of industrial plastic trays – which are prevalent across nearly all options – include handles or hand holes, stacking corners and lugs, easy clean surfaces, and long-lasting, durable materials (including Correx® and moulded ABS).
Why source plastic storage trays from GWP?
Although even standard handling products provide a wealth of benefits, working alongside a manufacturer of industrial trays – such as GWP Correx® – can offer further advantages.
Firstly, it allows the manufacture of your handling trays in bespoke sizes. Custom dimensions can allow for trays perfectly tailored to your parts or components. Using custom industrial trays can, in turn, minimise material usage, reduce storage requirements, and offer perfect compatibility with your production or storage environment (as well as any automated handling processes).
Besides this, you can also enhance any plastic tray you source from GWP with a range of insert options.
Inserts available include removable or integral divider sets, custom inserts and even foam dunnage (including machined foam inserts). All these – and the use of Bubbleboard material – can help protect items during handling and improve efficiency.
Other options include material colours, external printing (for adding branding or handling instructions, for example) and even anti-static and ESD safe trays.
Handling tray FAQs
Commonly asked questions regarding industrial plastic trays
Whilst, on the face of it, plastic trays may seem like a relatively simple topic, there are a surprisingly large number of questions which businesses ask about them.
This section aims to cover these, but if you need any further information, please call a member of the GWP team on 01793 754 457 (or email correx@gwp.co.uk).
What are industrial plastic trays used for?
Industrial plastic trays are popular for in-plant handling applications. Unlike tote boxes or containers (typically used for handling and returnable transit packaging), plastic trays tend to be smaller and shallower to aid handling.
Are these trays suitable for medical applications?
A large proportion of the plastic trays available are used for medical or pharmaceutical applications. Their suitability for these industries is due to the non-shedding nature of the material (i.e. they do not generate fibres which could contaminate products), their easy clean surfaces, and their ability to withstand a range of temperatures.
Can I source trays that safely stack?
It is possible to source several different stacking tray options. These allow for much better space efficiency when the trays are loaded with product, minimising overall storage requirements and allowing more parts or components to be present on assembly lines.
Are there any insert options for industrial trays?
As with plastic tote boxes, several insert options are available. Inserts can include simple Correx® division sets to help separate products, custom inserts (i.e. with bespoke-shaped recesses for specific parts) and even foam dunnage. Bubble-board – which can create dividers that protect against scuffs and surface marking – is also growing in popularity.
What colour trays are available?
There are many different colour options depending on the type of tray you require. Whilst colours are more limited with vacuum-formed options, trays constructed from Correx® can be specified in blue, green, red, yellow, white, black, and silver as standard.
What is the difference between plastic trays and plastic tote boxes?
Whilst the two terms are commonly interchangeable in many industries, plastic trays typically refer to smaller, shallower options that only contain a single layer of product. Tote boxes (also widely referred to as euro containers), on the other hand, will be larger format, used for heavier components or parts, may contain multiple levels of product, and are also commonly used as part of a wider supply chain (i.e. is returnable transit packaging).
