Nomar anti-scuff coating for corrugated
If your customers complain of scuffs, scratches or markings on products shipped in corrugated packaging, Nomar anti-abrasion cardboard is a cost-effective solution.
Nomar anti-scuff coating protects packaged items from marking caused by rubbing against the inside of cardboard packaging. It is ideal for shipping glass, plastic, rubber, polished metals and products with painted, printed, or high-quality finishes, making it popular for automotive parts and products with decorative retail packaging. It is also water-based, recyclable, and easy to convert.
GWP Coatings has supplied coated cardboard material to UK sheet plants for more than 35 years. Our expertise, in-house equipment and material stockholding allows for trade supply of volumes from 500 sq. meters on short lead times.

Technical and conversion information
Nomar is a water-based synthetic emulsion that coats corrugated board to prevent damage to packaged articles during transit, caused by abrasion and rubbing. In many cases, the ‘packaged article’ is not only the product itself but its high-quality retail display pack. Nomar also prevents scratching and abrasion of sensitive materials and finishes, including glass, plastic, ceramic, metal, wood and fibreglass.
Nomar coating can also help to prevent ‘pin-holing’ of gas-packed products, thereby significantly reducing spoilage.
The coating is non-offsetting, meaning it does not rub off onto the surfaces it comes into contact with.
Converters can glue Nomar-coated board with coldset (PVA) and hot-melt adhesives. Hot-melt adhesives must overcome the heat resistance of the coating.
Nomar has limited flexo printability. It is recommended, as a minimum, to use premium inks.
Nomar coating is available in various tints for identification purposes.
The coating utilises water-based synthetic emulsions that have no PFAs intentionally added, making it safe for manufacturing teams to handle without the need for protective equipment.
Typical coating weights range from 2.0 to 3.0 wet pounds per MSF (10-15 GSM).
Nomar coatings are re-pulpable in both acid and alkaline systems, ensuring coated material does not incur disposal costs.
Nomar is available from 500 square metres of material.
FAQs

Why is anti-scuff packaging necessary?
Whilst corrugated cardboard packaging may feel smooth, it can prove surprisingly abrasive to high-quality surface finishes. As a result, the jarring and impact which may occur during the shipping cycle can cause significant, observable damage. Nomar helps to protect items from the potentially abrasive nature of corrugated cardboard.
Does this protect other packaging during transit?
Printed packaging can often become scuffed or damaged during transit to retail outlets in outer shipping cartons. This aesthetic damage can then reduce a product’s appeal when displayed in-store, potentially harming sales. As such, Nomar-treated material is ideal for protecting retail packaging, as well as products with high-quality finishes manufactured from glass, rubber, and plastic.
What is pin-holing?
Pin-holing is a term used to describe micro-abrasions that can damage gas-packed products, such as food. Scuffing caused by the outer transit containers can result in the escape of some or all of the preservative gases, affecting freshness and shelf life. In the worst-case scenario, such damage can potentially render products unfit for sale.
Is Nomar suitable for industrial parts such as automotive components?
Nomar can effectively protect industrial parts during transit or lineside handling. It is particularly suited to protecting items such as dashboards, various trims, chrome parts and other elements that quality control inspections would reject if scuffed or marred.
Is Nomar easy for sheet plants to convert?
Nomar is easy for sheet plants to convert using most standard equipment. While converters must take care in selecting glues and inks used for (flexographic) overprinting, other processes remain the same as if converting uncoated board.
