More information on Single Wall Boxes
Single wall boxes are a great choice for a number of general packaging applications.
Using a lightweight, single walled corrugated material, these boxes are inherently low cost and perfect for shipping of items up to around 10Kg in weight.
As the boxes themselves are light and less bulky than double wall packaging options, they can also help to reduce shipping costs.
They can also be easily printed, adding your branding, instructions for handling, and other useful information. GWP are also able to add a range of specialist coatings – including water resistance, anti-scuff and even corrosion inhibitor (VCI) – for any specialist applications you may require.
All this means that as well as use for industrial / transit packaging, single wall boxes can also be a great choice for applications such as ecommerce packaging and for use in physical retail stores.
Why use custom single wall boxes?
There are hundreds of companies selling single wall boxes in a range of standard sizes from stock, usually in the form of standard corrugated cases / 0201s.
Whilst this provides a cheap way of buying corrugated boxes – particularly if you need very low volumes – there are a number of problems with sourcing your boxes in this way.
Firstly, choosing a stock size means you will always have to select a box that is slightly larger than you require. This then means you are paying to ship fresh air or are required to fill the box with additional void fill materials. Both of these factors will increase your ongoing costs.
Stock sized boxes will also not provide the same levels of protection as custom single walled boxes. Being tailored to the size of your product minimises movement in transit and the potential for damage this creates.
By sourcing your single wall boxes from GWP, not only can you add print and various coatings as detailed above, but you are also not limited to the standard 0201 design that single wall boxes are typically supplied in (which can be more labour intensive than other forms of packaging such as crash lock boxes to assemble).
Working with an experienced design team, your business can get a tailored single wall box that is the perfect size, suitable for your product, offers better protection, features custom print, can be easier to pack and – crucially – will actually reduce your costs over the longer term.

FAQs
Questions about Single Wall Boxes
Despite being prevalent in almost everyone’s lives (chances are you have handled some form of corrugated packaging today), there are still a number of questions on the subject of cardboard boxes.
This section answers some of the more common queries on single wall boxes but, if you need any information not provided here, please get in touch.
What are single wall boxes?
Single wall boxes are so called because of the type of corrugated cardboard material that is used to manufacture them. Single wall is effectively made up of three layers of paper – two outer liners and one layer of fluting (the corrugated part) that forms the cardboard material. When this material is converted into packaging, it becomes a single wall / single walled box.
Can I print onto single wall boxes?
Single wall boxes can be easily printed onto in a number of ways. For industrial packaging, this can be as simple as one colour branding and / or instructions. For ecommerce, postal packaging or even retail display boxes, this can be full colour, photographic imagery and designs. Whatever your requirement, single wall material provides a good substrate for printing onto.
How can I tell if a single wall box will be strong enough for my products?
Single wall boxes are typically suitable for products, parts, or components with a weight of up 10Kg. However, depending on the box style chosen, this may be slightly more or less. By working with GWP, a team of designers and packing engineers will be happy to advise on the material grade, box design and other features for your specific application.
What are BDCM boxes?
BDCM boxes are a range of standard sized shipping boxes, that can sometimes be manufactured from single wall material. Widely used for clothing distribution, BDCM stands for bulk distribution carton metric. You can also get a range of slightly differently sized BDC cartons (bulk distribution cartons).
What is the difference between a carton box and a corrugated box?
A common question concerns the difference between a carton box and a corrugated box. In simple terms, carton boxes tend to be manufactured from a solid card material (also referred to in the packaging industry as solid board). For example, the boxes used for cereals and iPhone packaging. Corrugated boxes use cardboard material, with visible fluting within the centre of the material.
