Hanging tab boxes can be a great choice for merchandising and packaging your products.

They are effectively a tuck end box, but with an additional, integrated header that contains a hole for hanging the packing on compatible display units in store.

Types of hanging tab

There are a number of different options with regards to the type of hanging tab used.

Euro tabs are the most common, with their traditional elongated shape with a curved section centrally at the top. Delta tabs meanwhile are triangular in shape, whilst it is also possible to get round or circular holes. GWP can also manufacture custom shaped hooks and hangers to any specific requirements that you may have for your hanging packaging.

Whilst it is common for plastic hanging tabs to be added to corrugated or solid board boxes, by integrating the tab into the cardboard material it has a number of benefits.

Firstly, it is more difficult for the tab to become detached from the box. It also provides an additional area for printing and adding messaging (the tab can be made to run across the full length of the box) and it is also more environmentally friendly too (as the cardboard is easier to recycle / dispose of correctly.

What is a hanging tab box?

A hanging tab box is effectively retail packaging that can be hung from a hook or a rail on a point of sale unit. This allows for multiple smaller products to be merchandised in such a way as to capture the attention of shoppers and increase stock density where products cannot be stacked easily.

What is the difference, between euro, delta, and circular tabs?

There is a number of different tab types that can be used depending on how / whether the product will be hung. Euro tabs are the most common, although delta (i.e. triangular hole) or circular are commonly used too. GWP can also create custom tab / hook designs should you need them.

Are the tabs integrated into the packaging?

Whilst many hanging tabs will consist of a small piece of plastic, hanging tabs can be integrated into the main structure of the corrugated packaging itself. The benefit of this is that it can help to prevent the tab becoming detached, and it is also more environmentally friendly as well (as the plastic may not always be fully recyclable).

Wouldn’t plastic hanging tabs be better?

Plastic tabs are suitable for a wide range of applications (GWP will be happy to offer impartial advice on the best option for your specific requirements). They can add additional cost however, and in many cases are not recyclable (unlike when integrated into the corrugated material).

Are hang tab boxes made from cardboard or solid card material?

Hang tab boxes can be manufactured from both solid board material or corrugated cardboard (i.e. with fluting between two layers of paper). As with the use of integrated or separate plastic tabs, the best option to use will depend on a number of factors including product weight and type, sizes, print requirements and market positioning. GWP will be happy to advise based on your specific requirements.

Can these boxes be any size?

Your hanging tab boxes can be manufactured to any size – within reason. Obviously, the hanging element must be strong enough to support the weight of the packs contents when hung, so this form of packaging does not lend itself to particularly large or heavy items.
