Introduction

Improving the longevity and appearance of Yard Sale Pizza's delivery boxes

Yard Sale Pizza, a fast-growing pizza delivery business in London, approached GWP Correx® to help with branding their moped delivery boxes. The company, with its own delivery fleet of more than 180 vehicles, was facing challenges with applying vinyl graphics to its existing boxes, which were not providing the longevity or consistent appearance the business desired.

GWP’s team, working collaboratively with Yard Sale Pizza and their branding agency, manufactured and printed the new boxes, ensuring they not only provided an excellent visual appearance but also a considerably longer lifespan and time savings for their logistics team.

About the customer

Yard Sale Pizza

Yard Sale Pizza has grown from humble beginnings – starting in a small oven in one of the founders’ gardens – to now serving pizza from 15 stores across North, East and South London. Despite its strong growth, the business still makes all orders by hand and delivers them using its in-house delivery fleet.

Yard Sale Pizza has won numerous awards, including the Observer Food Best Value Eats Monthly awards in 2022 and the Best Cheap Eats award in 2017, and has been voted London’s favourite pizza by Time Out. They have also worked on collaborations with, among others,  NYC pizza legend Frank Pinello and Mercury prize-nominated musician Loyle Carner.

The challenge

What Yard Sale Pizza aimed to achieve with its packaging

Keeping their deliveries in-house, Yard Sale Pizza initially sourced some plain black boxes to mount on their delivery fleet of bikes/mopeds.

Recognising these offered a significant advertising opportunity, the business purchased vinyl graphics which they then applied to the boxes. This approach, however, led to several issues.

Firstly, the stickers were time-consuming to apply, particularly with the requirement to accurately and consistently align them with the box’s edges.

The original Yard Sale Pizza delivery boxes, whilst providing significant advertising, had several issues.

Secondly, this branding method did not provide any real longevity. Whilst the graphics would last a reasonable time during warmer months, over winter, they would frequently become brittle and peel off. Irrespective of the conditions, the graphics could also become scuffed or faded over time, requiring regular replacement.

This second issue exacerbated the first, making this approach no more than a short-term solution.

The solution

GWP's expertise with printed Correx

GWP Correx® were initially recommended to Yard Sale Pizza by Grafton, the supplier of their delivery vehicles.

Having approached GWP, general manager Emily Parker and senior designer Steve Mann met with key members of the Yard Sale Team to discuss the challenges they were facing.

From this, Steve created a structural design that closely matched the existing solution but, critically, provided CAD files of the box layout for Yard Sale Pizza to pass to their branding agency. Their agency, in turn, created artwork files that GWP could use for printing the boxes.

Following approval of structural and visual designs, GWP manufactured the Correx® boxes at our Wiltshire production facility. GWP printed the branding directly onto the Correx® material using digital processes, before using advanced die-cutting techniques to create the finished boxes.

Upon manufacture, a bulk order of boxes was supplied flat to Yard Sale Pizza for assembly as required at their premises.

The results

How Yard Sale Pizza benefited from the project

The printed delivery boxes supplied by GWP Correx® to Yard Sale Pizza provided several benefits.

Firstly, the longevity of the boxes, particularly their branding, was vastly improved.

The previous solution of applying stickers to the plain moped boxes would sometimes last only a few weeks before peeling, looking tatty or faded, or falling off completely. The new boxes last an average of 6 to 9 months before requiring replacement (with many lasting significantly longer). As a result, the lifespan of the branding is now as much as 800% longer than previously.

Secondly, Yard Sale Pizza also eliminated the time-consuming, challenging task of accurately and consistently applying graphics to the boxes. This benefit typically saves many hours each month, as well as the monetary costs of repeatedly purchasing the graphics.

Thirdly, having consistent, recognisable branding on each of their 180-plus delivery vehicles also provided significant advertising for the business across London. Whilst difficult to measure, the delivery boxes are likely to have contributed to brand awareness and recognition of Yard Sale Pizza in the communities they serve.

Customer feedback

Yard Sale Pizza comments and feedback

Nick Buckland, Director and Co-Founder at Yard Sale Pizza, commented:

GWP Correx have been a great supplier for us. The new boxes they have produced not only provide the required functionality but also serve as a key tool for advertising and brand awareness. The boxes last so much longer whilst maintaining a consistent appearance. The team at GWP were friendly, knowledgeable, and couldn’t do enough to help throughout the project.

Johnnie Tate, another of the Directors and Co-Founders, added

The boxes look great. We’re really pleased with how they look, and they save our logistics team a lot of time, too.

Summary

Benefit from brand awareness and visibility

Although it’s an intangible benefit, having consistent, visible branding can play a significant role in a business’s success. Yard Sale Pizza proved this with their Correx® moped boxes, playing a small but essential part in the company going from strength to strength
