Engineered Corrugated Packaging Pallets

Lightweight but durable for specialist applications

Whilst corrugated cardboard pallets are not suitable for every scenario, they can offer a wide range of benefits for specific applications. This includes their light weight to reduce shipping costs, being available in custom sizes, improved safety (with no nails, splinters etc.) and being compliant with ISPM regulations.

They can also be manufactured alongside compatible pallet boxes, layer pads and transit packaging, and have even been fully integrated into product assembly lines by a number of manufacturers. Read More

More info on Cardboard Pallets

Cardboard pallets can offer a wealth of benefits for use in a specific set of applications (of which GWP will be happy to advise).

For example, cardboard pallets are considerably more lightweight than plastic or wooden equivalents. This not only means that they reduce transit costs (through reduced weights), but also means they are easier and safer to handle.

They also enhance safety in other ways, including eliminating potential injuries caused by splinters or nails. They do not suffer from insect or mould growth which wooden pallets can sometimes be prone to.

This also means that they are compliant with ISPM 15 regulations (that cover shipping timber internationally), making them ideal for export.

Besides this, if the pallet is being used for a single trip (i.e. it will not be returned), corrugated cardboard pallets are much easier for the end user to dispose of (they can be easily recycled, unlike wood or plastic). They are fully biodegradable too.

And finally, it is much easier to produce corrugated pallets to bespoke sizes if this is required (they can also be manufactured to all common pallet sizes as well). This can make them an interesting option for pallet displays in retail applications.

Example use case for corrugated pallets

One customer of GWP has taken advantage of corrugated pallets to fully integrate them into their manufacturing process.

As a producer of industrial refrigeration units, they use cardboard packaging pallets throughout the entire production process.

With the pallets being lightweight yet durable enough to be used on their conveyor systems, the large industrial products are assembled directly onto the pallet (moving through the assembly line as more parts are added).

Once fully assembled, the units, pallet dividers sheets and the pallets themselves are shrink wrapped before being shipped direct to their customers (who can then easily dispose of / recycle the pallet with minimum hassle).

Key benefits of cardboard pallets at a glance

  • Available in bespoke or standard sizes
  • Strong enough to replace wood in specific applications
  • Can be enhanced with moisture resistant and / or anti scuff coatings
  • Can result in reduced shipping costs due to lighter weight
  • Perfect for use on conveyors / production lines with items being assembled directly onto pallets
  • Safer than traditional wooden pallets (no nails, splinters etc.)
  • Compliant with ISPM regulations (i.e. can be shipped internationally)
  • Can be designed alongside compatible pallet boxes for complete solution

Common questions on cardboard pallets

Cardboard pallets? To many people, that is a question that needs addressing in its own right. But there are a number of other commonly asked questions as well.

The below section looks to answer as many of these as possible, but should you have any further queries then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Is cardboard really suitable for making pallets?

Cardboard pallets aren’t designed as replacement for wooden / plastic pallets in all scenarios. However, there are specialist applications where cardboard pallets can offer a number of advantages – for example where weight during shipping is a critical issue (e.g. air freight) or there is an onerous burden on the end user for disposal of the pallet.

What weights can these pallets take?

The weight that cardboard pallets can be loaded with varies depending on a number of factors (including the material grade used, structural design, reinforcements etc.). However, GWP can engineer an appropriate amount of strength into your pallets in order to meet specific requirements (and samples can be produced for physical testing of this too).

Are these suitable for use in very wet / damp conditions?

One area where plastic pallets in particular have an advantage over both wood and cardboard pallets is in very wet / damp conditions. Cardboard pallets can be treated with Liquiguard waterproof coating, although it would still be recommended to not leave the pallets in extremely moist conditions for a prolonged period.

How can these be integrated into our business?

A number of customers have utilised cardboard pallets as part of their manufacturing process – with items being assembled directly onto the pallet as passes along the production line. Other businesses have begun to use cardboard pallets for single trip applications, allowing end users to more easily dispose of them after taking delivery. They can even be used for retail POS as the base for pallet displays.

Are these pallets fully recyclable?

Corrugated cardboard (and the pallets manufactured from it) are fully recyclable and biodegradable. This means they are much easier for end users to dispose of / recycle, and if they do end up in landfill, they do not pose any environmental problems. This is in stark contrast to plywood pallets for example that are much more difficult for your customers to dispose of.

Can I have cardboard pallets made in a bespoke size?

Another key benefit of cardboard pallets is that it is much easier to produce them in bespoke sizes compared with wooden and (particularly) plastic options. This means if you are struggling to find a pallet for your specific application (for example in use as a pallet display point of sale) you can specify exactly what you need.

Can I get compatible pallet packs / transit boxes?

GWP manufacture the full range of transit packaging products. With more than 25 years’ experience – and covering everything from simple layer pads to pallet collars, integral fittings and a wide range of retail and ecommerce boxes too – your business can reduce costs and improve performance by sourcing all your packaging from a single supplier.

Cardboard pallets bespoke to your business

GWP’s cardboard pallets are not designed to replace traditional wooden, plastic or even presswood pallets across all applications. But, as highlighted above, for certain, specialist applications, corrugated pallets can provide a number of benefits for your business.

But, by working alongside GWP, there are other advantages you can realise. This includes access to an experienced design team, free and no obligation advice, a full sampling service, and even the ability to source all of your transit packaging (including compatible pallet boxes and layer pads for pallets) from a single supplier.

So, if you think switching to cardboard pallets could help your operations, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
