Cardboard pallets can offer a wealth of benefits for use in a specific set of applications (of which GWP will be happy to advise).

For example, cardboard pallets are considerably more lightweight than plastic or wooden equivalents. This not only means that they reduce transit costs (through reduced weights), but also means they are easier and safer to handle.

They also enhance safety in other ways, including eliminating potential injuries caused by splinters or nails. They do not suffer from insect or mould growth which wooden pallets can sometimes be prone to.

This also means that they are compliant with ISPM 15 regulations (that cover shipping timber internationally), making them ideal for export.

Besides this, if the pallet is being used for a single trip (i.e. it will not be returned), corrugated cardboard pallets are much easier for the end user to dispose of (they can be easily recycled, unlike wood or plastic). They are fully biodegradable too.

And finally, it is much easier to produce corrugated pallets to bespoke sizes if this is required (they can also be manufactured to all common pallet sizes as well). This can make them an interesting option for pallet displays in retail applications.

With the pallets being lightweight yet durable enough to be used on their conveyor systems, the large industrial products are assembled directly onto the pallet (moving through the assembly line as more parts are added).

Once fully assembled, the units, pallet dividers sheets and the pallets themselves are shrink wrapped before being shipped direct to their customers (who can then easily dispose of / recycle the pallet with minimum hassle).

Is cardboard really suitable for making pallets?

Cardboard pallets aren’t designed as replacement for wooden / plastic pallets in all scenarios. However, there are specialist applications where cardboard pallets can offer a number of advantages – for example where weight during shipping is a critical issue (e.g. air freight) or there is an onerous burden on the end user for disposal of the pallet.

What weights can these pallets take?

The weight that cardboard pallets can be loaded with varies depending on a number of factors (including the material grade used, structural design, reinforcements etc.). However, GWP can engineer an appropriate amount of strength into your pallets in order to meet specific requirements (and samples can be produced for physical testing of this too).

Are these suitable for use in very wet / damp conditions?

One area where plastic pallets in particular have an advantage over both wood and cardboard pallets is in very wet / damp conditions. Cardboard pallets can be treated with Liquiguard waterproof coating, although it would still be recommended to not leave the pallets in extremely moist conditions for a prolonged period.

How can these be integrated into our business?

Are these pallets fully recyclable?

Corrugated cardboard (and the pallets manufactured from it) are fully recyclable and biodegradable. This is in stark contrast to plywood pallets for example that are much more difficult for your customers to dispose of.

Can I have cardboard pallets made in a bespoke size?

Another key benefit of cardboard pallets is that it is much easier to produce them in bespoke sizes compared with wooden and (particularly) plastic options.
