Description

Detailed information on Correx® coffins

New legislation introduced in January 2015 classifies fluorescent (lighting) tubes as hazardous. This classification is due to the mercury content of these lamps, with each tube containing enough to pollute as much as 30,000 litres of water (i.e. so it is no longer fit for consumption).

Despite this, it is possible to recycle practically all elements of a fluorescent tube. And this is where businesses typically use Correx® coffins.

Manufactured in standard sizes to fit the majority of 6ft and 8ft fluorescent tubes – or bespoke sizes as required – Correx® coffins (also referred to as lamp coffins, fluorescent tube boxes or even WEEE recycling coffins) are effectively extra-long Correx® boxes.

Supplied flat to save space when not in use, you or your staff can easily assemble these disposal boxes to create a safe storage container for any broken, damaged, or worn-out fluorescent tubes waiting to be recycled.

The use of Correx® has several benefits for this task. Useful features include being incredibly durable and long-lasting (upwards of 100 uses/trips), fully weatherproof (meaning they can be left outside), and resistant to grease, dust, and most chemicals. These light tube coffins are also easy to clean and can incorporate handles for improving ease of use.

Alternative uses for WEE recycling coffins

Whilst the intended application for Correx® coffins is relatively narrow in scope, you can use these long Correx® boxes in numerous other applications too.

For example, they are ideal for use as plastic shipping boxes if you have particularly long or unusually shaped items.

Equally, they are perfect for the long-term storage of sensitive artefacts or museum collections (frequently used as museum storage boxes). Their popularity for this application is because the Correx® material used to manufacture these coffins is acid-free and almost completely inert (whilst also protecting from moisture and dust etc.).

The fact that Correx® coffins can be supplied in various colours and include printed branding and logos also means that businesses can use them for added value or returnable packaging for retail applications. The boxes are suitable for specialist tools, sports equipment, construction materials etc.).

FAQs

Common questions regarding Correx® coffins

Not sure whether you require Correx® coffins at your business? Whether they would be exactly right for your application? Don’t even know what they are?

All of this – and more – is answered in the following section.

What are Correx® coffins?

Correx® coffins are effectively long corrugated plastic boxes (similar to long cardboard postal boxes) that businesses commonly use for waste fluorescent tube storage at the end of their life. However, you can also use them to ship or store any particularly long items and products.

Why do I need to use Correx® coffins?

Fluorescent lights are considered hazardous due to the amount of mercury in them (enough to pollute as much as 30,000 litres of water). So, in response to new legislation introduced in 2015, Correx® coffins have been used as fluorescent light tube boxes to store them safely while awaiting proper disposal and recycling.

What is Correx®?

Correx® is a fluted polypropylene material which can be fabricated like cardboard to make a wide range of boxes, containers, bins and more. However, unlike cardboard, Correx® is waterproof, resistant to most chemicals, easy to clean, considerably longer lasting and more durable.

Can these be left outside on-site?

The properties of Correx® – namely being resistant to water and weather and being durable and hard-wearing – means that, unlike cardboard, you can safely leave Correx® lamp storage containers outside when on site.

Can I have a custom size Correx® coffin?

Whilst Correx® lamp coffins are typically manufactured in sizes to accommodate 6ft and 8ft fluorescent lamps and tubes, you can specify the exact size to suit your specific use or application. This size flexibility also makes Correx® disposal boxes suitable for many other uses.

Can these be used for other applications?

As effectively a long Correx® box, coffins can be used for several alternative uses. Applications include plastic shipping boxes for the transit of unusually shaped items or storage (commonly used as storage boxes at museums, galleries, research labs etc.).
