Should you use Peli Protector Cases?
Exhaustive info and details on Peli Protector range
But aside from being the original and best-known protective case, what makes Peli Cases – and the Protector range in particular – so popular?
This detailed Peli case buying guide provides all of the reasons why, alongside a compelling argument for using them (or alternatives depending on your specific requirements).
What are Peli Cases?
The original waterproof equipment cases
The original Peli cases were developed way back in 1967 – making them the first extra tough, moulded plastic, waterproof case option.
Their enduring success, popularity, and exceptional performance, means that they are still seen as the benchmark for all protective cases today. They have also spawned a number of related lines manufactured by Peli (including Air, Storm Case, Micro etc.) as well as many copycat products (including Explorer, Nanuk, B&W etc.).
Being so well established means a number of other benefits too.
For example, the range of sizes has been developed over the years to incorporate almost 50 different options (one of the largest of any type of case). It has also undergone extensive testing, including Stanag 4280 and Def Stan 81-41 certification (recognised by both the UK military and NATO) and has an IP67 rating.
The copolymer polypropylene material used is exceptionally tough, hard wearing and durable, and when combined with an open cell core and solid wall construction, guarantees protection for your items.
And, talking of guarantees, every Peli Protector case is supplied with a full manufacturers’ lifetime warranty. The slogan puts it best – “you break it, we replace it. Forever”.
Of course, all of this would be less important if the cases were not easy to use. Peli Cases do not disappoint here either (as the diagram below highlights further), with every Peli case offering a wealth of features to complement the high levels of protective performance.

Peli Protector Case Features
Designed for ease of use and enhanced longevity
As the original waterproof equipment case, Peli Protector pioneered a number of features that have still not been bettered even now. Others have been added or improved over the years, with the result being a case that provides comfort, usability, and protection in equal measures.
Please see the diagram below for further details of the Peli case features.
Easy Open Latches: Also referred to as “double throw” latches, the clasps not only provide easy opening and access to the cases’ contents, but are also extremely strong. In fact, the closures remain tight even during extensive drop and impact testing.
O Ring Seal: Manufactured from a flexible polymer, the tongue and groove design of the O ring creates a water and dust tight seal that is rated to IP67.
Easy Grip Handles: The ergonomic and well-designed handles also include a soft coating that enhances comfort when handling the cases.
Stainless Steel Pins (hinges): The hinges of the Peli Protector case range are manufactured using stainless steel pins – improving both durability and longevity – as well as ensuring smooth opening and closing of the cases’ lid.
Automatic Pressure Release Valve: Equalising pressure between the inside and outside of the case (e.g. if the case is submerged underwater for a prolonged period, taken to high altitude, stored in an aircraft hold etc.), the automatic valve not only protects the contents but also stops the case becoming deformed or opening when it shouldn’t.
Quiet Roll Wheels: Selected larger cases are supplied with wheels to improve handling. The use of steel ball bearings in these not only reduces noise, but also ensure a smoother operation and a longer lifespan.
Copolymer Resin Shell: The copolymer resin is used with an open cell core and solid wall construction to create an incredibly tough and durable case. The material is also resistant to the vast majority of chemicals too.
Padlock-able Eyelets: Being reinforced, the padlock-able eyelets provide both extra strength and resistance to being cut. This obviously allows for enhanced security of your sensitive and / or expensive items.
Branding Area: Unlike many of the Peli case alternatives, Protector cases feature a large, smooth area that can easily have branding applied to it. This could be through silk screen or digital print methods, or even the application of cut vinyl graphics.
Peli Protector Case Performance / Testing
Military standard testing and certification
With extensive use amongst military forces throughout the world, Peli Protector cases have undergone considerable testing. Please see below for details of the performance and accreditations / certification achieved:

At 25ºC, 2 hours of vibration at amplitude of ± 0.23” (± 6 mm) peak (0.46” DA) from 5 to 9 Hz and ± 2 g peak from 9 to 350 Hz and a sweep rate of 0.75 ± 0.25 octave.
Low Temperature Test G DEF STAN 81-41
Decrease temperature to -20 ± 2ºC for 16±5 hours and afterwards return to 20±10ºC.
Dry Heat Test C DEF STAN 81-41
Increase temperature from 25 ± 10ºC to 55 ± 2ºC, humidity not exceeding 75%, and maintain conditions for 48 ± 1 hours. Return temperature to 20 ± 10ºC.
Impact (Vertical) Test E DEF STAN 81-41
At 25±10ºC, the case is dropped from a height of 1000±5 mm making sure that the impact is received in all angles of the case.
A4A SPECIFICATION 300
Peli Protector cases are also ATA / A4A approved for use in air transit.
A4A, or Airlines for America (previously ATA – Air Transport Association) 300 is a specification document rating the approval and suitability of the case for shipment on the airlines, made up of the following categories for reusable containers:
Designed for over 100 uses.
Can be constructed of metal, plastic, or fiberglass.

The A4A 300 specifies how the containers can be constructed, how many handles they need per volume and how the interior must be designed.
Lids should not warp, handles and latches must be recessed or flush, and skid runners must be present if the container is over a certain size.
Cases need to be able to be stacked if they are over a certain size, and the markings must follow the specification for size and durability of the text.

Typical applications and industries where Peli Protector case use is widespread
Having been available for more than 3 decades, Peli Protector cases are commonly used by default in a number of industries and applications (even with the emergence of newer waterproof case options).
Whilst the below is not exhaustive, you can view a range of sectors for which Peli cases are a perfect fit.
Military / Armed Forces
Peli Protector cases are the solution of choice for the US military (amongst others).
Having been used for many years, armed forces rely on Peli cases to keep a huge range of equipment and kit safe and secure. This includes everything from comms gear all the way through medical kit, weaponry, and ammunition.
The protection from water and dust ingress is also particularly useful here (with both having the potential to cause serious damage), and the tough exterior allowing for rough handling too.
Ultimately – with certain equipment being the different between life and death – Peli cases are widely used for mission critical applications.
Although often not in such harsh or extreme environments, emergency services teams will face many of the same challenges as military forces do. Namely, how to keep vital, potentially lifesaving equipment protected.
As such Peli Protector cases are used for everything from paramedic’s kit through to firearms officers weapons (and everything in between). Being able to securely the lock cases is a huge advantage for this type of application too.
Often, the specialist kit used by service technicians, engineers and maintenance teams can cost hundreds or thousands of pounds. These items need to be protected.
Another potential cost is the delays caused by teams arriving on site with damaged or missing equipment.
Both of these can be avoided with the use of Peli Protector cases, particularly with the inclusion of custom foam inserts that provide additional cushioning protection
Many commercial industries involving marine environments – everything from oil and gas exploration to conservation and even tourism (i.e. scuba diving trips) – will need to keep certain items dry and protected.
Due to their IP67 rating, Peli cases are an ideal option for applications of this type. Besides being completely watertight (IP67 rated) the pressure relief valve also protects the contents of the case is submerged for a prolonged period.
Broadcast / Media
Peli Protector cases are a great option for the safe transit of broadcasting equipment, including photographic equipment. Combined with foam inserts, Peli cases allow expensive kit to be safely taken out on location to capture content. This is also the reason why Peli Protector cases are used by media teams covering extreme sports and / or visiting harsh environments.
