Guide to Peli Lightweight Case Options
Full product overview of the Peli Air case range
Need a lightweight case but finding the plastic carry case options don’t provide enough protection? Require waterproof protection for sensitive items, but finding Peli and other equipment cases are a bit bulky?
The answer is Peli Air!
This detailed Peli Air buying guide provides a full product overview of these cases – everything from their features, testing, applications, customisation options and even various alternatives to consider. You can also see a full list of Peli Air sizes here.
What Are Peli Air Cases?
The lightest waterproof cases currently available
Part of the larger range of Peli cases manufactured by Pelican Products, the key selling point of Peli Air is its light weight.
Being a much as 40% lighter than comparable waterproof cases, Peli Air use an advanced material and clever construction to minimise weight without sacrificing performance. In fact, some of the honeycomb structural elements and “full box” sections are actually stronger than solid polymer material!
This is backed up with extensive testing, highlighting how Peli Air cases not only remain fully dust and waterproof, but are also resistant to crushing and virtually unbreakable. They offer the same lifetime guarantee as found on Peli Protector, Storm Case and Micro offerings too.
Other differences between Peli Air and the Protector range includes the unique conic curve lids (designed to fit in overhead stowage more easily if used as carry-on cases) and rubber over moulded handles to improve comfort when handling. Nearly all of the other features of these cases are carried over from the existing Peli case ranges.
Being a relatively new addition to the waterproof case market (launched as recently as 2016) there is only a relatively limited range of sizes, but even these are offered in deeper and longer options than the standard Peli dimensions.

Peli Air Case Features
Light weight without compromising usability / features
Many manufacturers when looking to reduce the weight of a product will start by reducing the features present. Not so with Peli and the Air range of cases – which still boasts an incredible array of useful elements.
The diagram and accompanying notes below highlight the key features of these cases.
Watertight O-Ring Gasket: The o ring fitted to the lid of the case creates a watertight seal and means Peli Air cases are IP67 rated. As a result, Peli Air cases can be submerged underwater (up to 1 metre) for 30 minutes without water ingress.
New Style “Conic Curve” Lid Shape: The lid of the Peli Air cases features a new and unique design. Known as a conic curve, this not only provides the cases with a distinct and attractive appearance, but has also been designed to allow them to be more easily stored (particularly in overhead storage compartments on planes)
Super-Light Proprietary HPX Polymer: The HPX polymer that is used on Air cases is unique to Peli. This resin formula will bounce back after impact without breaking or shattering, lending excellent strength and performance to the cases.
Stainless Steel Hasp Protectors: The stainless-steel protectors included around the pad lock-able eyelets not only provides added strength, but also makes it much more difficult to cut off locks or break into the cases.
Ultra-tough double-throw latches: The latches are similar to those used on the Peli Protector cases. The double throw design not only means they are quick and easy to use, but also create an incredibly tight seal which will not be broken even after repeated impacts.
Automatic Purge Valve: The pressure purge valve on the Peli Air cases will equalise the pressure between the inside and outside of the case. The main advantage of this is that the stops what is known as vacuum lock, preventing the case from being easily opened.
Rubber Over Moulded Handles: The handles feature a unique rubber coating to not only make them more comfortable to use, but to prevent marking of hands if carrying heavy equipment over long distances / periods.
New Removable Polycarbonate Card Holder: It is possible to add branding, identification tags or instructions to the cases using the new card holder feature
Inline, Ultra-Smooth-Running Wheels: Larger cases in the Peli Air range feature Peli’s unique, ultra-smooth, extra quiet wheels. These are not only suitable for all terrain but can be replaced easily too if required.

Example Uses / industries for Peli Air Cases
As with the majority of waterproof cases, Peli Air are suitable for a huge range of applications (too many to list here in fact). However, there are certain scenarios where the lighter weight of these cases makes a real difference, a number of which have been listed below.
Engineers / Maintenance
The fast-growing use for Peli Air cases is their use by service engineers, technicians and on-site operatives.
They are typically used for the safe transportation of tools and equipment (including very specialist kit) out on to site to service or repair items. Anything from military vehicles through to air conditioning units – Peli Air will allow for your employees to more easily get the job done.
Adding in custom foam inserts can further help with this too, not only increasing protection from impact / mishandling, but also aiding organisation and highlighting any missing equipment too.
Peli cases are widely used throughout the Military (including the Hardigg roto mold and rack mount units), and have been for many years.
The use of Peli Air cases is starting to gain traction, helping to reduce the weight of items that need to be shipped to hostile environments, as well as reducing workload for personnel in these areas.
Of course, their reliability, strength and durability – shared with the Peli Protector ranges – are also highly desirable for the most demanding of applications.
Security & Policing
Safe and easy handling of firearms, medical kit and other lifesaving equipment can be crucial for emergency services. Weight savings can be extremely beneficial when transporting such items too, with Peli Air providing a key advantage here.
Another benefit is the added security of the stainless steel eyelets that can be padlocked – helping to secure the cases (and making it much more difficult for the cases to be cut open as per some all plastic equivalents).
Offshore / Aquatic / Marine Environments
Being completely watertight ensures that Peli Air cases are a good choice for any environment where important electronics or other kit needs to be kept safe and dry.
This includes Naval forces, as well as commercial ventures such as offshore oil and gas exploration, and even tourism (i.e. scuba diving tours etc.).
Photography / Broadcast
Professional audio-visual equipment can be surprisingly heavy. And with more and more footage of extreme environments being captured (including for documentaries and even extreme sports competitions) any weight savings can be very useful.
Of course, protection levels are not sacrificed either, ensuring that any equipment being handled or stored will remain safe, dry, and unharmed.
