Deciding on a Waterproof Case

Complete product details for Nanuk case range

Although the waterproof case market is one of the most crowded and competitive, Nanuk cases are still regarded as one of the best options for a huge range of applications.

Boasting an incredibly tough outer shell and – crucially – offering a huge range of options and features as standard, Nanuk cases combine the best elements of other protective cases and offer them at very competitive price points. They can, of course, be enhanced still further with the inclusion of custom foam inserts.

If you are considering Nanuk cases – or looking for a tough equipment case – then the below guide sets out the information you will need when making a decision.

Nanuk cases buying guide

What are Nanuk Cases?

Durable cases designed to withstand extreme conditions / use

Nanuk cases, designed and manufactured in Canada, are one of the newer protective cases available. However, Plasticase – the manufacturers of the Nanuk range – have actually been creating injection moulded products (including cases) since 1984.

This experience and knowledge is clearly evident in the Nanuk case range.

Utilising a high performance NK7 resin and a unique design (with chamfered edges and smooth corners) Nanuk cases offer both exceptional protection and an attractive appearance.

With 27 sizes (although still growing), Nanuk cases actually outperform many of the more established cases in terms of the number of colours on offer (with up to 9 on most cases).

Nanuk cases boast a wide range of features as standard, in contrast to many of their rivals

Every Nanuk case is completely watertight, having undergone a range of tests to prove this (and other performance claims such as impact resistance, vibration, drop test etc.).

The range of features is also impressive, with integral bezel kits / panel mounts, lid stays, pressure relief valves and wheels for the larger case options.

As such they are used in a very broad range of sectors., but in particular by first responders, search and rescue, law enforcement, audio visual, diving and professional and semi-professional sports (in addition to other more industry focused applications).

Nanuk cases can also be easily enhanced with bespoke foam inserts, branding to external surfaces, and a number of other customisation options.

Please watch the brief video below for a quick overview of Nanuk Case features and benefits. Please note this video content is provided by Nanuk / Plasticase.

Nanuk Case Features

High protection coupled with a wealth of features

Arguably the key selling point of Nanuk cases is the range of features included as standard which are often optional extras on other similar cases.

Saying that, Nanuk cases also feature everything you would expect from an ultra-tough, waterproof case.

The diagram and accompanying notes below highlight these features.

Nanuk Case Features

Powerclaw Latch: The powerclaw latching system is one of the most secure of any protective case, effectively stopping Nanuk cases from opening accidentally and spilling their contents (even if dropped). It is also easy to operate and helps maintain the fully waterproof seal provided by the cases.

Design Language: not a feature as such but certainly a noteworthy point, is that the Nanuk cases feature a very distinct design. This incorporates clean lines, chamfered edges, and smooth corners to create a unique aesthetic appearance. The external surfaces of the case can be branded / printed too.

Waterproof Seal: The design of the case and the internal mouldings helps to create a completely watertight seal. In fact, the cases are IP67 rated.

Ultra Tough Exterior: Nanuk cases are manufactured from an ultra-tough, impact resistant NK7 resin, with thick walls to add further protection.

Soft Grip Handle: The soft grip, spring loaded handle is comfortable to use even with a fully loaded case over long distances.

Panel Mount / Bezel: With most other waterproof cases, adding electronic equipment can mean purchasing a separate bezel kit (which, asides from the cost, can also affect water resistance and performance). Nanuk cases provide a top and bottom mounting strip as standard, so that electronics can be easily mounted within the case.

Padlock Loops: The metal reinforced pad lock holes allow you to lock the cases for added security (including with TSA locks for international travel)

Wheels: Smooth running wheels, manufactured using polyurethane (similar to those found on roller blades), allow for much easier movement of larger cases. All cases with wheels also include a retractable handle too.

Pressure Relief Valve: Changes in altitude, temperature, humidity, and geographic location can often create what is termed a “vacuum lock”. This can effectively seal a case shut. The integrated auto-pressure valve on Nanuk cases equalises this atmospheric pressure difference by use of a micro vent that allows air to pass through while preventing water from entering.

Lid Stay: Another feature that is standard on Nanuk cases but an optional extra on others, is the lid stay (allowing the case to remain open and providing easier access to the contents).

Nanuk Case Performance / Testing

Military standard testing results and accreditations

View detailed information on the various controlled tests / results conducted to military specifications in the section below.

ASTM D-4169 DC-18 Drop Test

For the drop test, weights ranging from 6.8 to 31.8 kg fall on to the case from a height of no less than 48 cm. Drop weight is determined by case size.

ASTM D-4169 DC-18 Vibration

This evaluation determines NANUK’s ability to withstand repetitive shocks that can occur during loose-loaded transportation.

ATA Specification 300 CATEGORY 1 IMPACT

Nanuk cases are suitable for a minimum of 100 airline trips. NANUK also stands up to heavy impact, with no damage occuring following a 6 kg dart falling on to the case’s weakest point from a height of 0.5 m.

IPX7 Ingress Protection (water)

Nanuk cases can be submerged in up to 1 m of water for a period of 30 minutes without leakage or damage of any type.

IP6X Ingress Protection (dust)

Nanuk cases demonstrate 100% protection against dust.

ASTM D-4169 DC-18 Rainfall

Simulated rainfall lasts 20 minutes per case side at a rate of 10 cm/hr. During a second test, rain falls at a rate of 10 cm/hr while the case is heated 18 degrees F higher than the water’s temperature. The second test lasts 4 hours.

MIL-STD-810F Immersion

The case is submerged in a container of water 1 m deep for 1 hour. For this test, the case is heated to 40 degrees F higher than the water’s temperature.
