Description

Detailed Info on Cardboard Fitments

With so many different options to use for your box inserts, it can be tempting to pick a relatively “standard” format. Or go with a well-established and widely used material, such as foam or polystyrene.

And whilst there are likely applications where products such as dividers, Korrvu® or foam end caps would be the most suitable, many businesses overlook the range of benefits that custom cardboard inserts can provide. The bespoke nature of these inserts – being tailored to your products – helps to amplify these benefits still further.

Often referred to as cardboard fitments or even die cut fittings, inserts of this type can provide similar levels of protection to the other options listed (effectively by preventing movement in transit) whilst providing further advantages.

For example, product presentation is greatly improved when using corrugated fittings. This is particularly important for ecommerce packaging, mail order businesses or even companies supplying subscription box services, as creating a good first impression on your customers is critical.

Custom designed Cardboard Inserts / Fittings

In fact, not having a lot of bulky foam or polystyrene to dispose of is another serious advantage that your customers will appreciate. And the growing focus on minimising environmental impact will see custom cardboard inserts hold another advantage here too (as they can be more easily recycled, and are biodegradable).

Plus your inserts can be branded with logos, instructions or product references to reinforce their usefulness.

There are operational benefits of using this type of box insert too.

As mentioned above, foam inserts (or polystyrene) are bulky, taking up lots of storage space. Corrugated fitments can be supplied flat for assembly and insertion, or can even be integrated into the outer box itself.

Both these points can allow for faster assembly of your business’ packaging, as well allowing for quicker and more accurate packing too. Ultimately, this will help improve your fulfilment velocity, allowing you to process them more quickly and reduce lead times to your customers.

Key benefits of custom cardboard fittings / inserts

  • Tailored to be a perfect fit for your product
  • Custom designed to provide a wide range of unique, innovative options
  • Engineered to eliminate movement in transit, protecting your products
  • Can be used to provide enhanced product presentation
  • Can be integral to outer container, minimising assembly / storage
  • Removable options to allow use with existing packaging inventory
  • Potential to improve packing times and fulfilment velocity
  • Much more space efficient that foam inserts (i.e. during storage)
  • Fully recyclable, biodegradable and environmentally friendly

FAQs

Questions regarding corrugated fittings

The below covers to key questions usually asked when discussing custom cardboard fittings and inserts.

However, please contact GWP on either 01793 754 444 or packaging@gwp.co.uk if you still require additional information not highlighted here.

What are cardboard fitments?

Cardboard fitments are inserts (or sometimes part of the outer carton) that are shaped to sizes and / or profiles of your products. This allows you or your packing team to place items into the available pockets / recesses, which in turn prevents damage in transit and also enhances product presentation for the end consumer.

How are custom cardboard inserts manufactured?

After an extensive design process to ensure the inserts and fitments are a perfect fit for your product range, the inserts are usually manufactured through die cutting. This allows for accurate, high quality finish, but also for your boxes or inserts to be supplied flat (saving on storage space).

Why should I use cardboard fitments instead of foam?

Foam inserts – even though many of them can actually be recycled – are perceived as being bad for the environment. Consumers will often prefer custom cardboard fittings as they are easier to recycle, and less bulky too. This final point can also benefit your operations – with flat packed corrugated fittings taking up much less space in your warehouse / packing bays.

Are there scenarios when foam inserts would be better?

If you have exceptionally high value products, or products which are particularly fragile, then engineered foam packaging will provide the highest levels pf protection. In these cases, the cost savings from preventing damage in transit mean that foam inserts are likely the most cost effective and suitable option. If you are unsure of what would be best for you, please ask a member of the GWP team for free, impartial advice.

Are corrugated fittings cost effective?

Corrugated fittings are extremely cost effective, due to their efficient use of material and the relatively low cost of the cardboard itself. Whilst there will likely be a tooling cost up front, the lower unit costs will quickly offset this when comparing with foam inserts.

How can cardboard fittings improve my fulfilment times?

Custom cardboard fittings can improve your fulfilment times in a number of ways. Firstly, they can be quicker to assemble than having to add foam inserts or layers to the outer corrugated packaging. They can also allow for quicker and more accurate packing, due to products having allocated recesses to be placed in.

Designs and quotes just for your business

Whilst there are a number of tried tested custom cardboard fitting designs available, the real benefit of using this form of box insert is the inherent flexibility. This allows them to be tailored to your specific products, applications, markets or other requirements.

Not only does this result in a better fit, improved protection and enhanced aesthetic appeal, but can also take into account wider operational pressures too. It can help speed up packing times. Minimise box assembly times. Even help with storage (e.g. if eliminating bulky foam).

With any cardboard fittings being customised to your requirements, it means that all prices and quotes are bespoke too. All quotes supplied by GWP Packaging are no obligation as well, with no risk to your business of exploring this option.
