Why using the right foam inserts is crucial for successful shipping

It can be tempting to cut corners when shipping fragile products.

Both industrial and consumer items such as TVs, laptops, and even white goods such as washing machines, can be packed to a budget. However, when even a surface blemish or scratch can render the product unfit for sale, items damaged in transit can quickly make cheap packaging uneconomical.

This is a scenario where low density Polyethylene foam packaging can offer significant improvements to product quality on delivery to your customer.

Foam end caps, inserts, blocks and more

Whilst simple foam lining applied to cardboard packaging is effective, as are the use of foam blocks, foam end caps created from such materials as Ethafoam and Stratocell are the simplest and easiest option for protecting items in transit.

In fact, end caps are widely used to protect electronic equipment and other fragile products against shock, vibration and mishandling that may occur in your delivery / courier network.

They also offer the most efficient use of material, making them not only cost effective, but more environmentally friendly too (particularly when compared with expanding foam packaging or foam packaging chips).

This is in addition of course to the protection they provide against shock and vibration.

Regardless of the form of foam packaging you select, your insert will be manufactured from either Stratocell or Ethafoam materials (both of which are available as recycled foam packaging grades). Due to the versatility, performance and cost of these foams and the foam box inserts they create, their use is prevalent amongst producers of equipment such as computers, home electronics, and a multitude of high value industrial products.

As official fabricators of the Sealed Air range of Polyethylene foams, GWP are able to cost-effectively manufacture packaging foam cut to size for the protection of your business’ fragile components or products in transit.

Foam Packaging FAQs

Frequently asked questions about foam packaging products

The section below covers a number of common questions regarding the foam packaging and related products available from GWP Protective.

However, please contact a member of the GWP team – on 01722 416 440 or protective@gwp.co.uk – if you cannot find the answer to your specific question.

What is foam packaging made from?

Foam packaging can be made from a number of different materials. However, the most widely used foams are the Stratocell and Ethafoam ranges from Sealed Air, both of which are polyethylene based materials. GWP Protective are official converters of these types of foams, as well as Plastazote®, a cross-linked polyethylene foam used for more specialist applications (such as Peli case inserts).

How does foam packaging protect my products in transit?

Foam packaging inserts can protect your products in a number of ways. Firstly, they can help to “brace” your products within the outer container, preventing damage through collision with other contents or the walls of the external box. Foam can also absorb some of the shock that occurs if a parcel is dropped or mishandled by allowing a more controlled deceleration of the product on impact.

Are foam lined boxes suitable for my requirement?

Foam lined boxes are a good option for when a varied product inventory is being distributed, but a level of cushioning protection is required. However, as a foam lining isn’t generally optimised to suit the product, it may not be the most effective option for a lot of applications.

What are foam end caps?

Foam end caps are fabricated foam items that are placed over the ends of the item being shipped before it is placed within the outer shipping box / container. This not only holds it in place, but also provides cushioning on the corners and edges. They are also very efficient in terms of material usage (and therefore costs).

How do you manufacture foam packaging?

Packaging foam is converted at GWP Protective’s modern facility (in Wiltshire) in a number of ways. This includes die cutting, laminating, waterjet cutting and pressing. This is in addition to a number of finishing processes to ensure your foam packaging performs exactly as required. GWP have been providing foam conversion services for more than 25 years.

Where can I get compatible outer packaging boxes?

When sourcing foam packaging and the outer boxes separately, there can be issues with compatibility. For example, if the sizes are not exactly correct, it can impair the transit protection / performance. As a result, your business can source a full range of corrugated packaging, Correx® plastic boxes, rigid plastic tote containers, protective cases, and even anti-static packaging direct from GWP alongside your foam packaging.

Will using foam affect packing times?

Depending on the type of foam product you select, making use of foam packaging can have a slight impact on your packing times. This is mainly due to adding another process to your staff’s actions when packing. However, this slight drop in productivity must be weighed against the vast decrease in resources required to handle and process damaged and returned items that using foam packaging can achieve.

Need help choosing the right foam packaging for your business?

With over 25 years of experience in designing and manufacturing foam packaging, GWP offers your business a number of real, tangible benefits. One of the most significant of these is the ability to source both your foam and exterior box – be it corrugated cardboard, Correx® or plastic – from a single source.

This has 2 obvious benefits.

Firstly, costs and administration are both minimised by eliminating the need to use separate suppliers. Secondly, the quality and fit of the foam with the exterior pack is also much better, improving quality, performance, and protection.

Besides this, your business will have an allocated point of contact who will be able to guide you through the entire design and quoting experience. Alternatively, if your company has previously used similar packaging, your advisor will be able to ensure your exact requirements are met and, wherever possible, exceeded.

So, if you can’t find the right foam packaging for your business, are looking for a more cost-effective option or simply don’t know where to start, GWP Protective can help. Get in touch today for free, no obligation advice or a fully tailored quote.
